Santa Justa Lift

A ride on the Santa Justa Lift is a memorable part of exploring Lisbon and a practical way to see the city from a different perspective. Opened in 1902, this striking iron structure was designed to connect the lower streets of the Baixa district with the higher Carmo area, making the steep climb much easier for locals and visitors alike.

What immediately stands out is its design, with detailed neo-Gothic style ironwork that makes it feel more like a landmark than a piece of transport infrastructure. It was designed by Raoul Mesnier du Ponsard, a student of Gustave Eiffel, which is often reflected in its elegant, industrial style.

At the top, there is a viewing platform that offers impressive views over Lisbon's rooftops and the surrounding hills. It is a great place to pause, take photos, and appreciate how the city is layered across its seven hills. Including the Santa Justa Lift in your itinerary adds a short but rewarding experience that combines history, engineering, and some of the best views in central Lisbon.
