Sintra
Sintra is one of Portugal's most enchanting destinations, located just under an hour from Lisbon and set within the lush, forested hills of the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park. It is best known for its romantic palaces, mystical gardens and dramatic hilltop castles, which together create a truly fairytale-like landscape.
Highlights include the colourful Pena Palace, perched high above the hills with sweeping views; the mysterious Quinta da Regaleira, famous for its symbolic gardens and underground tunnels; and the ancient Moorish Castle, offering panoramic views over the coastline and countryside. The historic centre of Sintra itself is also charming, with narrow streets, traditional pastry shops and elegant 19th-century architecture.
Due to its popularity and the spread-out nature of the sites, visiting Sintra can be quite busy and logistically challenging, especially in peak season. For this reason, a private driver and guide is highly recommended, as it allows for a much smoother experience, better time management between monuments, and valuable local insight into the history and stories behind each site.
Sintra is a must-see day trip from Lisbon, combining natural beauty, history and architecture in one of the most unique cultural landscapes in Europe.
