Off the Beaten Path... Mallorca's Hidden Beaches

Caló del Moro
If you drive 15-minutes south of Santanyí and take a 10-minute walk
down to the beach you will find Caló del Moro, a small bay flanked
by craggy cliffs and pine trees. Its crystal-clear water has a
bright turquoise hue and its beach is powdery white sand. It can
get busy with the locals at weekends and there are no facilities,
so arrive early armed with a picnic, towel and plenty of water.
Cala Varques
A 15-minute walk from a parking spot (unless you arrive by boat),
Cala Varques, on the east coast, is isolated and rugged. The sea is
a deep turquoise blue and its sand is golden. If you like a little
adventure, there are many rock formations to explore. It is
possibly the most popular cliff-jumping spot on the island. This
wild beach is difficult to find and even more difficult to
forget…
Cala Mondragó
The Mondrago Natural Park sits just 10km or so south of the popular
beach of Cala D'Or. The eight square kilometres of natural beauty
is home to one of the island's most secluded spots, Cala Mondragó.
With sand dunes and pine forests, the beach has been protected from
development so remains largely unspoilt, but benefits from
facilities including a bar and restaurant, lifeguards at peak
season and toilets.
Cala Murta
Just 10 minutes before you arrive at the beautiful - and well-known
- Formentor beach, park up on the ascending scenic road and follow
a narrow lane to Cala Murta. This stony beach is hidden deep inside
a rocky bay and its glassy water is crystal clear and calm. It is
very peaceful; there are no amenities nearby and it isn't
well-frequented - with the exception of wild goats who often trek
down to bask in the sunshine!
Sa Calobra
Where the Tramunatana Mountains collide with the Mediterranean, you
will find the beautiful beaches of Sa Calobra. Divided by the
Torrent de Pareis, the two beaches offer glass-like clear blue
water and a craggy backdrop. While it is difficult to get to;
ferries run from Port de Sóller during peak season but otherwise
you'll need to drive the scenic - but winding - mountain road, it
is a breath-taking place to spend the day and watch the sun go
down.
But sshhh…or they won't be a secret for long!
