Praça do Comércio

  • Address: Avenida Infante Dom Henrique 1C Lisbon 1100-148, Portugal

A visit to Praça do Comércio is one of the most impressive stops in Lisbon and a key highlight of any itinerary. Opened in the mid-18th century after the 1755 earthquake, this vast riverside square was carefully rebuilt as part of the city's new layout, symbolising Lisbon's recovery and resilience.

Facing the Tagus River, the square is framed by elegant yellow arcaded buildings on three sides, creating a grand and open space that feels both historic and lively. At its centre stands the statue of King José I on horseback, quietly anchoring the square's long history.

Today, Praça do Comércio is a vibrant meeting point, often filled with street performers, cafés, and people simply passing through or relaxing by the water. Walking through the Arco da Rua Augusta leads you directly into the heart of the Baixa district, making it a natural starting or finishing point for exploring central Lisbon. Including it in your itinerary offers a sense of scale and history that perfectly captures the spirit of the city.
