National Coach Museum

The National Coach Museum, also known as Museu dos Coches, is one of Lisbon's more unusual cultural highlights, focusing on royal transport rather than traditional art or monuments.

Established in 1905, it brings together an impressive collection of historic carriages dating from the 16th to the 19th centuries. These vehicles were once used by Portuguese royalty and nobility, not only for daily travel but also for grand ceremonies and important diplomatic events.

What stands out most is the extraordinary craftsmanship. Many of the coaches are richly adorned with gold detailing, painted scenes, and elaborate interiors, each one reflecting the power and prestige of the people who once travelled in them. Some even tell stories of Portugal's connections with other parts of the world.

The museum itself is split between a modern building and the original royal riding school, which adds an interesting contrast to the experience. It's an easy place to explore at your own pace and offers a different perspective on Lisbon's past, centred on elegance, status, and design.
