The History of Sri Lanka

Like many islands gifted with generous natural resources and appealing beauty, Sri Lanka is a mix of influences and cultures that have been drawn to the island over the centuries, from pious missionaries to opportunistic invaders. Being both close to India and part of ancient trade routes, traders and travellers from India, East Asia and the Middle East have all become part of the island's history, not to mention Europe's colonial influence. With over 2,000 years of culture, there's legendary temples, the magnificent Aukana Buddha, and many other UNESCO World Heritage Sites to see and explore.

Sri Lankan Food & Drink

Sri Lanka's place in history as a trading post for exotic spices, its position between East and West in the Indian Ocean, and waves of visitors have all contributed to a varied and vibrant cuisine. Reminiscent of Indian cookery but with a distinct Sri Lankan twist, it tends to be more heavily spiced, intensely flavoured, and includes more non-native ingredients. You can of course cook in the privacy of your own villa, but the country's rich food culture is open to you however you would like to experience it, from the aromatic street food to high-end restaurants. Just remember to try egg hoppers, green jackfruit curry and a wood apple smoothie during your stay.
