The History of Singapore

According to legend, Singapore was founded in the distant past when a prince from Sumatra discovered the island and spotted a lion, which he considered a good omen. He soon founded a city called Singapura, or "lion city". While the validity of this story is unknown, there's a written history of Singapore that dates back to the third century, and it became a major port in the 1300s under the rule of Sultan Iskandar Shah. It was invaded and destroyed by both the Majapahit from the Indonesian islands in 1398 and the Portuguese in 1613, after which it sunk into obscurity. Modern Singapore was founded in 1819 by the British (in particular Sir Stamford Raffles) and has been an independent state since 1965.

One of the defining features of this city is its fascinating blend of the old and new. From our Singapore luxury property you can explore the city's varied heritage, from the old colonial buildings to the subtle reminders of the Chinese, Malay and Indian influences that have formed modern Singapore.
