The 5 must-visit hotspots for 2020
10th January, 2020
Whether it's watching the finest athletes on the planet strive for gold, playing 18 holes in an award-winning destination or discovering the cream of the international arts scene, let us inspire you with experiences that will last a lifetime.
1) Cheer on the athletes at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan
Expect a warm welcome from Tokyo - the Japanese capital has experience in playing the host, previously holding the Games in 1964. This time around, five new sports are being added to the Olympic line-up: karate; surfing; skateboarding; sports climbing; and baseball/softball.
Kitsutsuki is our magnificent, Alpine-style chalet in the relaxed village of Annupuri in the Niseko ski region. Not just worth visiting in winter for knee-deep powder snow, in summer Niseko is an adventure playground, with rafting, mountain biking and golf on hand. The football games at the Olympics are taking place only a two-hour drive away in Sapporo City, while the rest of the action is an hour and a half's flight away in Tokyo.
2) Play a round of golf in the best golfing destination in the world
It's official, the Algarve has been voted 2020's best golf destination in the world by the International Association of Golf Tour Operators (IAGTO). The accolade doesn't come lightly - IAGTO represents a whopping 700 golf tour operators from over 60 countries, and the Algarve won thanks to the quality and diversity of its 40 courses, as well as for the natural beauty of the region.
Check into Villa Palmeira, our smart, gracious five-bedroom villa in the Dunas Douradas resort. Located between Quinta do Lago and Vale do Lobo, numerous championship golf courses are nearby, including Victoria Golf Vilamoura, home to the Portugal Golf Masters 2020 European Tour.
3) Soak up the culture at the Taormina International Festival of Arts
Every July to September, the Sicilian hilltop town of Taormina welcomes some of the world's finest artists, creators and performers to its annual International Festival of Arts held in its ancient Greco-Roman theatre. Highlights this year include a 10-year anniversary concert from Il Volo and a date on the Simple Minds 40 Years of Hits tour.
The Old Mill, further down the coast between Avola and Noto, is a fully restored olive oil mill and the perfect place to retreat to with family or friends. Split your time between the inspiring events in Taormina and the restorative golden beach at Agua.
4) Be among the first to experience the Humboldt Forum in Berlin
Much anticipated, the Humboldt Forum is finally due to open in September 2020. A super-sized museum, its home will be in the reconstructed Berlin Palace, a mighty mix of Baroque and contemporary design. As well as a vast collection of exhibits from across the globe, there'll be regular discussions, readings and concerts, plus a view from the roof terrace that stretches to the Brandenburg Gate.
Our eclectic but modern two-bedroom apartment in Potsdamer Platz is the perfect base for exploring all the delights of Berlin. Be in town for the opening of the Humboldt Forum, or drop by for the long-running JazzFest Berlin, the two light festivals in October or the street festivals in summer.
5) Soak up the sea life at the Samui Regatta
Koh Samui's annual regatta celebrates all that Thailand's palm-fringed, lagoon-laden island is famed for - sun, sea and sailing. Held annually in May since 2002, it's the largest sailing race of its kind in Asia and attracts more than 500 sailors. But it's not just about the competitive action out on the water, a whole fleet of parties and events take place throughout the week too.
Our oceanfront villa, Baan Metta, is the ideal place for dipping in and out of the action. Located in Lipa Noi, one of the most beautiful and tranquil spots on the island, stunning sunsets can be enjoyed from the pool while the Gulf of Thailand laps at the edge of the garden.
