The purpose-built ski town of Snowmass in Colorado offers a vast sprawl of linked blue runs and a quaint village packed with restaurants and shops, all within easy reach of Aspen. There are four nearby ski areas: Snowmass, Aspen Mountain, Aspen Highlands and Buttermilk offering something for skiers of every level.

For intermediates, don't miss the 14-minute ride on the Silver Queen gondola in Aspen Mountain all the way to the peak then down a ski vertical drop of 3,267ft, including part of the World Cup downhill course.

These six ski-in, ski-out three-bedroom mountain retreats housed in a private residential club, are a short shuttle ride to Aspen. But there is plenty to do closer to home. Hold on tight as 10 Alaskan dogs pull you through the wilderness during a dog sled tour at Krabloonik. Catch a ride up 2,212 vertical ft on the Sheer Bliss chair lift while taking in the wondrous mountain views. Or camp around the crackling fireplace at 36 Degrees at Sky Hotel for a leisurely après ski.

After a gruelling day in the outdoors, head home and soak in the outdoor heated pool and hot tubs before sipping a hot chocolate by the stone fireplace.

But it isn't only skiing and relaxing that is on offer at Snowmass. In the summer, try your hand at trout fishing or tee off at one of the area's award-wining golf courses. For culinary adventures, dine at one of Snowmass's many restaurants, such as Gwyn's, a mountain restaurant accessed only by skiing serving Alpine cuisine or Krabloonik, which serves delicious wild game, caribou and fresh fish in a rustic log cabin.
