The Festas de Santo António are Lisbon's biggest annual celebrations, taking place throughout June, with the main highlight on the night of 12-13 June, marking the eve of the feast day of the city's patron saint.
From late May, neighbourhoods such as Alfama, Graça, Mouraria and Bica begin decorating their streets with colourful garlands, lanterns and streamers. By early June, the atmosphere builds quickly, with outdoor grills, music and temporary stages appearing across the city. Around 10-12 June, most historic districts are fully transformed into lively street parties, known as arraiais.
The celebrations feature grilled sardines, music and dancing in the streets, creating a vibrant, informal atmosphere that lasts late into the night.
A key highlight is the Marchas Populares, a colourful parade along Avenida da Liberdade on the night of 12 June, where each neighbourhood performs choreographed routines in elaborate costumes.
Another special tradition is the Noivas de Santo António, where selected couples take part in a collective wedding ceremony held in Lisbon. Known as the "Brides of Saint Anthony," this symbolic event reflects the saint's association with love and marriage and is one of the most emotional and iconic moments of the festivities.
It is a unique moment when Lisbon becomes one large city-wide festival, combining tradition, food and local culture.
