Aveiro
Aveiro is a charming coastal city in central Portugal, located about 250 km north of Lisbon. The journey takes around 2.5 to 3 hours by car or about 2 to 2.5 hours by train, making it quite far for a simple day trip.
Known as the "Venice of Portugal," Aveiro is famous for its scenic canals, colourful moliceiro boats, Art Nouveau buildings, and nearby salt flats and beaches.
Because of the travel time, it is best enjoyed as part of a longer stay in Lisbon or a multi-day trip north, ideally with an overnight stay in Aveiro or Porto, rather than a rushed same-day return. This allows more time to explore the canals, try local sweets like ovos moles, and enjoy the relaxed coastal atmosphere.
