Knossos: The Ancient Heart of Minoan Civilization
Explore Vibrant Ruins and Early Bronze Age Art
Knossos was the Bronze Age hub of Minoan society, and today remains a place of interest on the island- albeit in ruins. Despite having been abandoned for centuries, Knossos still retains a wealth of information and intrigue for anyone with an interest in history- the murals, architecture and objects found on site have proven crucial to our understanding of the Minoan's way of life. According to Greek mythology, the palace was designed by Daedalus to house the Minotaur although this is difficult to envision as the palace was evidently rather beautiful and full of colour. Ochre red pillars, frescoes of proud griffins and decorative mouldings can be found scattered amid the ruins: It was a place of art and luxury rather than dark secrets. Arrive early to this popular attraction in order to obtain some excellent photographs with minimal tourist disruption.
