Belém Tower

Belém Tower is one of Lisbon's most iconic landmarks and a striking stop along the riverside in the Belém district. Built between 1514 and 1520, this UNESCO World Heritage Site once served as a defensive fortress and ceremonial gateway during Portugal's Age of Discoveries.

Set directly on the banks of the Tagus River, it stands out for its elegant Manueline architecture, detailed stone carvings, and small watchtowers that give it a distinctive silhouette. It is one of those places that looks particularly impressive from the outside, especially when viewed from the riverfront.

Inside, the tower is quite compact, with narrow staircases and limited space, so visits can feel brief and crowded. Many people even say that it is not necessary to go inside, as the main appeal lies in its exterior and riverside setting rather than the interior itself.

For this reason, it can be perfectly enjoyable to admire it from the outside and move on, especially if time is limited. If you do choose to go in, it is best early in the day to avoid queues. Including Belém Tower in your itinerary still adds an important historical highlight, even if you only experience it from the outside.
