The National Pantheon, located in the historic Alfama district, is one of Lisbon's most important monumental buildings and a striking example of Baroque architecture. Originally built as the Church of Santa Engrácia, it was later converted into the National Pantheon, where several of Portugal's most prominent figures are laid to rest.

Inside, the building is impressive in scale, with a vast white marble interior crowned by a large central dome. The space feels both grand and serene, with intricate details, ornate chapels, and commemorative tombs dedicated to writers, politicians and cultural icons.

One of the highlights of a visit is the panoramic terrace at the top of the dome, which offers some of the best views in Lisbon, stretching over the Alfama rooftops and across the Tagus River. The climb is well worth it for the scenery alone.

Today, the Panteão Nacional serves both as a place of remembrance and a cultural landmark, combining historical significance with architectural beauty. It is a peaceful and atmospheric stop, often included in walking routes through Alfama.
