The MAAT (Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology) is one of Lisbon's most striking contemporary cultural landmarks, located in the riverside district of Belém along the Tagus River. It combines a modern, sculptural building with a beautifully restored former power station, creating a unique dialogue between industrial heritage and contemporary architecture.
The museum is split into two main parts: the new MAAT Gallery, designed with a flowing, wave-like structure that you can walk over and underneath, and the historic Central Tejo, an early 20th-century power station that now hosts permanent exhibitions and industrial installations. Together, they explore the relationship between art, architecture and technology through rotating international exhibitions.
Inside, the experience changes regularly, with temporary exhibitions covering contemporary art, design and forward-thinking themes. The old power station side offers a very different atmosphere, with vast machinery halls and an insight into Lisbon's industrial past.
Outside, the MAAT Garden runs along the riverfront, offering a pleasant walking route, sculptures and open public space with views over the Tagus and the 25th of April Bridge.
Overall, MAAT is both an architectural landmark and a cultural hub, best experienced slowly as part of a walk through Belém alongside other nearby attractions such as the Jerónimos Monastery and Belém riverside.
