Andrew Edwards on his recent trip to Villa Arabella

Returning home, time and time again

For Club Member Andrew Edwards, returning to Villa Arabella in South Africa felt both familiar and special. He and his wife first visited the estate years ago, among the earliest guests when the hotel first opened, and the distinctive architecture and peaceful setting made a lasting impression. "It truly lives up to the name Hideaways,” Andrew says. “Private and secluded, yet with everything close at hand.”

Set within the Arabella Country Estate near Hermanus, the villa offers sweeping views, generous living spaces and a long swimming pool perfect for an early morning swim. Andrew especially enjoyed the upstairs lounge and terrace, where sunrise over the hills is well worth waking for. A hidden woodland path behind the property leads towards the estuary and lagoon; a quiet spot to unwind once the golfers have finished their day.

The fairways and beyond

Golf is naturally a major draw, with Arabella widely regarded as one of the finest courses Andrew has played. But the appeal of the area extends far beyond the fairways. The surrounding coastline offers dramatic drives, beautiful beaches and renowned whale-watching spots, while nearby Hermanus has evolved into a stylish seaside town with excellent restaurants, coastal paths and nature reserves stretching into the mountains behind.

A slower rhythm of life

The region's food and wine also made a strong impression. Just inland, the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley produces exceptional cool-climate wines, while estates throughout the Western Cape combine scenic settings with relaxed, high-quality dining. For Andrew, it's a destination that rewards exploration - whether walking nature trails, swimming in tidal pools, or simply enjoying the slower rhythm of life by the ocean.

What stood out most, however, was the sense of care. The villa was beautifully maintained and thoughtfully equipped, and the local concierge team made every part of the stay effortless.

"Passionate, attentive, and genuinely proud of what they do," Andrew says. "It makes all the difference."

Above all, the trip offered something many Members seek - a complete change of pace. "It's a wonderful place to escape the UK winter," Andrew reflects. "Sunshine, space, nature, and time to properly relax. We came home already thinking about when we might return."
