The Maritime Museum (Museu de Marinha) in Lisbon is one of the most impressive cultural institutions dedicated to Portugal's seafaring history and the Age of Discoveries.
Located next to the Jerónimos Monastery in Belém, it is deeply connected to the country's maritime heritage, celebrating the explorers who shaped global navigation and trade routes from the 15th century onwards.
Inside, the museum presents an extensive and fascinating collection of over 20,000 objects. These include beautifully detailed ship models, royal barges used by the Portuguese monarchy, navigation instruments, nautical maps, astrolabes, and historic maritime artefacts. One of the highlights is the collection of ceremonial royal boats, which are displayed in a striking dedicated hall.
The exhibition is organised in a clear and engaging way, guiding visitors through centuries of naval history-from the Age of Discoveries to more modern naval developments. It offers a strong visual sense of how Portugal became a global maritime power.
A visit here usually takes around 1 to 1.5 hours and pairs perfectly with nearby landmarks such as the Jerónimos Monastery or the riverside area of Belém.
It's an ideal stop for anyone interested in history, exploration, or Portugal's unique connection to the sea.
